New York State approves greenhouse gas standards for vehicles

Albany, New York – The New York State Environmental Board has approved state regulations that adopt the greenhouse gas emissions regulations already passed by California. Vermont has also adopted the California restrictions, which mandate vehicles to emit approximately 30 per cent fewer greenhouse gas emissions by 2016.

New York first adopted the California Low Emission Vehicle (LEV) program in the early 1990s. Under the Clean Air Act, states can either adopt the more stringent California LEV program, or adhere to federal standards. The new regulations will take effect for the 2009 model year.
