Cumulative U.S. hybrid sales top one million in 2007

Washington, D.C. - The cumulative reported sales of hybrids in the U.S. reached more than 1,002,000 units in 2007, according to a report by the Green Car Congress. The sales figures start with the introduction of the Honda Insight in 1999 and run through 2007.

The sales figures come from manufacturers' monthly reports and do not include sales from General Motors, which does not break out its hybrid sales separately.

While Honda and Toyota each held approximately an equal share of the market during its first few years, Toyota gained share rapidly in 2004 and beyond. At the end of 2007, Toyota accounted for 80 per cent of all reported new hybrid sales, and 73 per cent of the cumulative sales reported in the U.S. from 1999 to 2007.
