U.S. hybrid sales up 27.3 per cent in January
Washington, D.C. - Sales of hybrid vehicles in the U.S. in January 2008 climbed 27.3 per cent over January 2007 to 22,392 units, according to a report by the Green Car Congress. That number does not include hybrid sales figures from GM, which does not report them separately.

The reported sales represent 2.14 per cent of the more than 1.04 million new vehicles sold in the U.S. in January. According to figures from Autodata, total new light-duty vehicle sales in January declined 4.2 per cent from January 2007, with total passenger car sales declining 2.3 per cent and total light truck sales dropping by 6.1 per cent.

The Toyota Prius posted best-ever January sales of 11,379 units, an increase of 37.1 per cent over January 2007. The Camry Hybrid reported sales of 3,750 units, up 33.9 per cent and representing 11.9 per cent of all Camry models sold. The Highlander Hybrid sold 2,143 units, an increase of 18.4 per cent and 17.4 per cent of all Highlander models sold.

The Lexus RX 400h reported sales of 1,211 units for January, a 2.7 per cent drop, and 17.9 per cent of combined RX 350/400h sales. The LS 600h L hybrid sedan sold 105 units, representing 5.5 per cent of combined LS 460/600h sales. The GS 450h sold 64 units, a decrease of 61.7 per cent; it represents 30.5 per cent of combined GS 460/450h sales, and 4.3 per cent of all GS model sales.

The Honda Civic Hybrid sold 1,745 units, a 2.1 per cent decrease from January 2007 and 8.2 per cent of all Civics sold, while 48 units of the now-discontinued Accord Hybrid were sold, a decrease of 80.6 per cent and 0.2 per cent of all Accord models sold.

The hybrid versions of the Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner sold a combined 1,474 units, a 19.1 per cent increase and 10.9 per cent of all Escape and Mariner units sold.

The Nissan Altima Hybrid sold 473 units in January 2008, representing 2.2 per cent of all Altimas sold.
