CanadianDriver's New Car Buyer's Guide 2007:
BMW 7 Series

For 2007, the BMW 7 Series receives several new standard features. On the exterior, there are power folding mirrors, satellite radio pre-wiring, automatic trunk, soft-close doors, 19-inch star-spoke alloy wheels, and optional 18-inch star-spoke wheels with all-season tires.

Inside, the 7 Series now has an auxiliary input jack, electric rear and side sunshades, driver’s active seat, ventilated front comfort seats, heated rear seats, and Logic7 sound system. The 750Li receives Adaptive Drive and self-levelling rear air suspension, while the 760Li now has Night Vision.

BMW’s top-of-the-line sedan, the 7 Series is available in two wheelbase lengths and three models. The 4.8-litre V8 is used in the regular-wheelbase 750i and long-wheelbase 750Li, while a 6.0-litre V12 is used in the 760Li, which comes in long wheelbase only. All models use a six-speed automatic transmission with Steptronic manual mode.

Features on the 750i include 19-inch wheels, adaptive automatic headlamps with high-pressure washers, adaptive brake lights, fog lights, heated auto-dimming mirrors, rain-sensing wipers with heated washer nozzles and wiper rest area, self-charging keyless remote, heated door locks, soft-close trunk lid, four-spoke leather-wrapped multifunction heated steering wheel, automatic dual-zone climate control, auto-dimming rearview mirror, power sunroof, heated leather seats with 14-way driver and 12-way passenger power adjustment, driver position memory, iDrive system, BMW cellular phone system, navigation system, BMW assist with emergency button, voice system control, and six-CD player with ten speakers, including two subwoofers.

The 750Li adds 20-way adjustable front seats with active head restraints, two-position passenger memory, rear foot wedges, and front and rear bumper chrome trim strips.

The 760Li adds 19-inch wheels, electronic damper control, self-levelling rear air suspension, park distance control, rear-seat side thorax airbags, electronically-adjustable rear headrests, rear seat pyrotechnical tensioning system, automatic trunk lid, illuminated V12 logos on the door sills, heated rear seats with 14-way power adjust and two-position memory, rear seat ventilation, full Nasca leather, 13 speakers with two subwoofers, trunk mounted six-DVD system, and rear iDrive system with screen.

The 7 Series is a big car, but even the long-wheelbase models have a sports sedan feel, with superb handling and immediate response that make them feel much smaller and more nimble. The V8 is a strong engine, the V12 heavenly; the interior is beautifully luxurious and the driving experience is grand. The iDrive system has been simplified from earlier models, but there is still a lot to learn, and there are plenty of controls up front to distract if you’re not careful. No luxury is overlooked, from massaging seats to an available two-bottle refrigerator. The extra features on the 750 models raise the price considerably over 2006 levels, but the 760Li MSRP is unchanged.
