CanadianDriver's New Car Buyer's Guide 2007:
Hummer H2

For 2007, the Hummer H2 and the H2 SUT (sport utility truck) have minor changes: there are special-edition Glacier Blue and Victory Red packages, a new All-Terrain Blue exterior colour, and a rear vision camera system and a rear-seat DVD system with dual headrest-mounted viewing screens as available options. The rear vision camera features an 8.9-cm (3.5-inch) full-colour display that automatically deploys from the right side of the rearview mirror when the vehicle is placed in Reverse.

The Glacier Blue and Victory Red limited-edition packages include the rear vision camera, body-coloured brush guard and tail lamp protection, body-colour fender moldings, unique rocker moulding with integrated assist step, and low-profile, roof-mounted light bar with integral lamps. The packages also include chrome hood handles, hood latches, exterior side vents and fuel filler door, 17-inch polished aluminum wheels, interior carbon-fibre accents, unique instrument cluster with silver-backed gauges, heated washers, and rear-seat DVD system with dual headrest-mounted viewing screens and wireless headphones.

Both H2 models are powered by a 6.0-litre V8 engine mated to a heavy-duty Hydra-Matic four-speed transmission, with a Borg-Warner two-speed, electronically-controlled, full-time 4WD system. The system can further reduce the gear ratio by 2.72:1, for obstacle climbing.

Both the H2 and H2 SUT come in a single trim line, and feature 17-inch aluminum wheels, power foldaway heated mirrors with driver’s side auto-dimming feature, full body skid plates, roof rack side rails, trailer package, variable intermittent wipers, automatic dual-zone climate control, cruise control, garage door opener, auto-dimming rearview mirror with compass, leather interior, leather-wrapped steering wheel, ten-way power adjustable heated front seats with driver memory, 60/40 folding second seat with heated cushions, Bose CD system with eight speakers, OnStar and XM Satellite Radio.

The SUT adds a short cargo box with a locking tailgate, swing-away spare tire and an extra set of taillights in the bumper. Like the Chevrolet Avalanche, the SUT features a “Midgate”, which remains upright when rear passengers are inside. When more cargo space is required, the power rear window lowers into it, and the Midgate and rear seat can be folded forward to increase the pickup bed. The bed also contains built-in cargo tie-downs, a hard tonneau cover, 110-volt outlet, and drain holes for easy cleaning. The SUT also has one-button express-down that lowers all four windows plus the Midgate window simultaneously, and a huge Sky Roof power sunroof.

Based on a shortened Suburban chassis, the H2 is a huge, heavy vehicle, and it feels even bigger with its tall sides and short windows. New upcoming fuel economy standards will mean GM will finally have to release its figures, but for now, the H2 is large enough that it bypasses fuel consumption testing, although estimates run as high as 22 L/100 km (13 mpg Imp). The H2 really is as capable as claimed, able to handle a 40 per cent slope, ford 500 mm of water and climb 400 mm-high rocks, but don’t expect many to travel much outside the urban jungle.
