Completely redesigned for 2007, the Toyota Tundra is unchanged for 2008, save for extendable towing mirrors on some models, and an available bed liner package.
The Tundra is available as a two-door Regular Cab, four-door Double Cab and four-door CrewMax Cab. It comes with three bed lengths (5-foot-5, 6-foot-5 and 8-foot-1), and in two- or four-wheel drive. The company says that all models are half-ton configuration.
Two engines are available, a 4.7-litre V8 with five-speed automatic, and 5.7-litre V8 with six-speed automatic. Both engines meet Ultra-Low Emissions Vehicle (ULEV II) emissions certification standards. Trim levels are the Deluxe, SR5 and Limited.
All models come with dual-zone air conditioning, tilt column, overhead sunglass storage, locking glove box, accessory power outlets, engine immobilizer, trailer package, tire pressure monitoring system, power heated mirrors, cargo bed tie-downs, front and rear splash guards, and a removable locking tailgate.
Depending on the model, additional standard or optional items include CD/MP3 stereo with auxiliary input, six-CD stereo, premium cloth seats, sliding rear window, cruise control, variable intermittent wipers, power locks with keyless entry, power windows, bucket seats, back-up sensor, back-up camera, auto-dimming mirror, fog lamps, power sunroof, Bluetooth hands-free telephone system, off-road package and DVD-based navigation system.
The winner of the 2008 Canadian Truck King Challenge, the Tundra is a powerful yet sophisticated truck, with high-quality interior, strong performance, good handling, and such niceties as a bed rail cargo system and a damped tailgate that doesn't bang when it's dropped. The Double Cab features front-hinged doors, instead of the more awkward rear-hinged ones popular on some models, while the CrewMax is huge and offers plenty of room for both front- and rear-seat passengers. The Tundra's size may be a drawback for smaller drivers, though: the centre stack is extremely wide and some may have to reach across to access all of the controls.
