2002 BMW 7-Series!

Scheduled to be unveiled at the Frankfurt auto show in September, the all-new 2002 BMW 7-Series sedan will offer a number of features not seen before in the luxury car segment, including a new six-speed automatic transmission, an innovative i-drive control system, and airbags for the knees.

Significant powertrain improvements

Canada will receive one engine and transmission combination - the 2002 745i will be equipped with a substantially-revised 4.4 litre V8 and a new six-speed automatic transmission. Though it shares the same displacement as its predecessor, the new 4.4 litre V8 features new valve timing (double VANOS), valve lift (Valvetronic), and for the first time, intake tube length, that all adapt continuously. This enables the new engine to set new standards of performance and efficiency. The new 4.4 litre V8 is rated at 333 horsepower (up from 282 horsepower) and develops 450 Nm of torque (European ratings).

The 4.4 litre powerplant is mated to the world's first production six-speed automatic transmission. It uses shift-by-wire technology and is operated by a lever behind the steering wheel.

The new 7 Series combines a new all-aluminum suspension with Dynamic Drive, a computerized system that improves handling through Active Roll Stabilization (ARS) which combines special sensors with two active anti-roll bars to reduce body "roll" or "lean".

The iDrive concept

BMW's new new iDrive system involves a reduction in, and reorientation of, driver controls. The elements of immediate importance for driving are located in and around the steering wheel, and a few frequently-used core functions may be found in the centre of the dashboard. Most of the other functions - including navigation, telephone, climate control and entertainment systems - are all controlled through a Controller, and are set in the centre console in concert with the Control Display. iDrive is an attempt to make it easier and safer to operate the myriad of features at the driver's disposal.

More safety features

In Canada, the new 745i will feature Active Knee Protection, unique airbags for the knees of front seat passengers. As well, an advanced Head Protection System (HPS II) in the new 7-Series works with the optional rear side airbags to provide inflatable head protection for rear seat passengers as well as front. Active Head Restraints offer enhanced whiplash protection in rear impacts.

Coordinating all of the passive safety systems is the Intelligent Safety and Information System (ISIS). ISIS uses a variety of sensors to tailor the restraint systems' response to a more precise reading of the severity of each impact.

On sale January, 2002

After making its world debut in Frankfurt in September, the 745i will go on sale in Europe in November, 2001. It will make its North American debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January, 2002, and go on sale in Canada later that month. Prices have not been announced.
