Saturn L-Series, 2000-2005
The Saturn L-Series mid-sized sedans and wagons, which were loosely based on the European-market Opel Vectra and Saab 9-5, had some reliability issues, but four-cylinder cars have proven to be more reliable than V6 models, says Contributing Editor Chris Chase.
Pontiac Solstice/Saturn Sky, 2006-2009
These fun-to-drive GM sports cars are less expensive than a Mazda Miata and are available with turbocharged engines, but they’re not as reliable or as practical. General Motors issued a recall for leaky differential pinion seals in early 2008.
2009 Saturn Aura XR4
For 2009, the Saturn Aura’s four-cylinder engine is available in the top-line trim model. Assistant Editor Jil McIntosh says the roomy, well-done Aura can easily stand up to the best of its competitors.
Saturn S-series, 1996-2002
GM's second-generation, American-built Saturn S-series sedan, coupe and wagon have a record of engine and transmission problems, says Contributing Editor, Chris Chase. But a well maintained wagon "should be easy to find for $4,000 or less," he writes.
