Pontiac G8 sport truck
New York, New York – Pontiac has announced that it will introduce two new versions of its rear-wheel drive G8 sedan at the New York Auto Show: the 2009 G8 GXP, and a yet-to-be-named 2010 G8 sport truck.
The G8 GXP will reach dealerships in late 2008 and feature a 6.2-litre V8 producing more than 400 horsepower. The engine is the newest member of GM’s small-block V8 family; it will complete the G8 line-up of 3.6-litre V6 and 6.0-litre V8.
“More than just raw power, the GXP delivers the sophisticated yet exciting driving experience that enthusiasts expect in a car costing far more than the GXP,” said Jim Bunnel, general manage of Buick-Pontiac-GMC.
The GXP will feature a new, optional six-speed manual transmission or standard Hydra-Matic six-speed automatic transmission. Pending final testing, the new model is expected to deliver zero to 96 km/h performance of about 4.7 seconds. Other features will include GXP-tuned suspension and steering, Brembo braking system, 19-inch wheels with performance tires, bolstered sport seats and 230-watt Blaupunkt audio system.
The new 2010 G8 sport truck is based on the G8 sedan, with a longer wheelbase and cargo bed suitable for work or recreation. Its styling is reminiscent of the Chevrolet El Camino, and is based on the Australian Holden “ute”.
The new G8 sport truck will be named by the public; as of March 15, consumers can visit www.pontiac.com/namethiscar and submit their name ideas. The winning entry will be announced on April 15.
The doors, roof and exterior panels from the B-pillar back are unique to the truck, which uses one-piece outer body panels, wrap-around taillamps, fully concealed tailgate hinges and a colour-coordinated soft tonneau cover. It uses the 6.0-litre V8 with Active Fuel Management found in the G8 GT, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, and provides car-like fuel economy with a zero-to-96 km/h time of 5.4 seconds.
The bed provides 1208 litres (42.7 cubic feet) of cargo space with a durable composite bed liner; the truck has a payload of more than 488 kg (1,074 lbs) and can tow 1,600 kg (3,500 lbs).
