Nissan to market electric vehicles in 2010

Tokyo, Japan – Nissan Motor Company has unveiled its 2012 mid-term business plan, which includes the introduction of an electric vehicle in the U.S. and Japan in 2010, and a convertible version of its Infiniti G37 coupe.

The company reported that it sold a record 3,770,000 vehicles worldwide in fiscal year 2007, an increase of 8.2 per cent, and released eleven all-new models globally, including the Altima Coupe, Infiniti G37, Rogue, Murano, GT-R and Infiniti EX in North America, along with the Livina, X-Trail, Atlas truck, Aprio, and single-cab Frontier Navara pickup truck in global markets.

The five-year business plan, called Nissan GT 2012, covers the period from April 1, 2008 to March 31, 2013 and is focused on the company’s long-term performance. Its three commitments are quality leadership, including improvements to service, brand and management quality; zero-emission vehicle leadership, with an all-electric vehicle in U.S. and Japan in 2010 and then mass-market vehicles to consumers globally in 2012; and an average five per cent revenue growth over five years, supported by a product plan that will launch sixty all-new models in the next five years, and more than 15 new technologies every year from 2009.

The company will also expand its focus on Infiniti, light commercial vehicle and global entry cars, and increase its market share in India, the Middle East, Brazil, Russia and China.

“Nissan GT 2012 reflects the determination of our company to play a major role in the development of a sustainable mobile society,” said Carlos Ghosn, Nissan president and CEO. “There’s a balance to be sought between the potential growth in world markets, and the demand for a cleaner planet. We are convinced that the mass availability of affordable zero-emission vehicles is the most significant breakthrough our industry could deliver, and together with Renault, Nissan intends to be the breakthrough leader.”

The company forecasts global sales of 3.9 million units in fiscal year 2008; it will launch nine all-new products during that time, including the Teana, Infiniti FX, Maxima, a successor to the Bakkie, the Qashqai+2, a mini SUV, the Cube, Z and an Infiniti G37 convertible.
