New online resource helps young and new drivers

Ottawa, Ontario – The Traffic Injury Research Foundation (TIRF) has announced the launch of its new online Young and New Driver Resource Centre, a “one-stop shop” designed for parents, young and novice drivers, researchers and policymakers.

The centre was created with funding from Toyota Canada Inc., and contains in-depth information on graduated driver licensing and driver education programs, research, and other young driver safety initiatives that are available in Canada. It is available at TrafficInjuryResearch.com.

In conjunction with the launch, TIRF is releasing a new report, Youth and Road Crashes: Magnitude, Characteristics and Trends, which is available through the centre. The report found that one-third of all deaths and injuries among young people aged 15 to 24 are due to road crashes, and that motor vehicle collisions are the leading cause of hospital admissions among youth. Recent trends are not promising, and there has been little improvement with regards to young driver crashes in the last several years.

Established in 1964, TIRF is a national, independent, charitable safety institute with a mission to reduce traffic-related deaths and injuries.
