Solihull, England - Land Rover has unveiled the new Freelander 2 TD4_e at the Paris Motor Show, its most fuel-efficient vehicle to date with the incorporation of an intelligent Stop/Start system. It is the first production vehicle to incorporate technologies from the company’s program of sustainable engineering initiatives, named “e_Terrain Technologies”.

Compared with the outgoing manual diesel Freelander 2, the Freelander 2 TD4_e has an eight per cent reduction in CO2 emissions and measured fuel savings of up to 20 per cent in heavy urban traffic. The Start/Stop feature automatically shuts down the engine when the vehicle is idling.

“The Stop/Start Freelander 2 is the first production vehicle to benefit from the massive £700 million investment in sustainable technologies by Jaguar and Land Rover,” said Phil Popham, Land Rover’s managing director. “From mid-2009, the Stop/Start feature will be included as standard on all Freelander 2 TD4 manual models, with no associated increase in list prices.”

The company’s display at the Paris show also includes the Diesel ERAD Hybrid, which stands for Electric Rear Axle Drive. The system is currently at the prototype stage; it is intended to lower vehicle emissions overall while enhancing all-terrain performance.
