Preview: 2010 Dodge Ram Heavy Duty
The all-new Heavy Duty Ram pickups borrow many of the new half-ton’s styling cues, plus their vastly improved interior design and materials, reports contributor Howard J. Elmer. And they add capacity in every area – payload, towing and people moving.
First-Drive: 2009 Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra Hybrids
A full-size pickup truck rated at better mileage than some four-cylinder compacts? The 2009 Chevrolet Silverado is, says Managing Editor Grant Yoxon, and it’ll tow and haul like a regular model, although its higher price may deter many buyers.
2009 Ford F-150 4X4 SuperCrew
Ford’s redesigned F-150 Super Crew has “an almost obscene amount of rear-seat space”... ”but getting up into the truck is still a workout,” says Contributing Editor Chris Chase. The F-150 Super Crew is comfortable and capable, he says.
2008 Ford F-250 Crew Cab 4×4 diesel
Over 80 per cent of Super Duty buyers (F250 and up) order the turbo diesel option because of its superior towing ability, reports contributor Howard J. Elmer. The Super Duty's new 6.4-litre turbo diesel is also quieter, he says.
2009 Ford F-150
Completely redesigned, the 2009 F-150 is "extremely well done," says Assistant Editor Jil McIntosh, with new engines, stronger frame and a long list of new standard and optional features.
2009 Dodge Ram
Now into its fourth generation, the new Ram pickup offers improved aerodynamics, a much nicer interior, new coil spring rear suspension, and a lower MSRP. However, box choices have been scaled back and there are no powertrain upgrades.

"The Ram appears to be no worse off in the reliability department than its domestic rivals," says Contributing Editor, Chris Chase, but the third generation truck is only rated "average" by Consumer Reports, he says.

Ford Ranger, 1998-2007
The compact pickup truck is a dying breed. The Toyota Tacoma and Nissan Frontier are now more like mid-sizers, and the Dodge Dakota was never anything but that. That leaves but a handful of little pickups to carry the compact banner. Among these are General Motors' Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon, and the Ford Ranger - and its Mazda B-series twin - that you see here.
