Volkswagen

Volkswagen Rabbit, 2007-2009
Though the fifth generation Rabbit and GTI received above-average used vehicle ratings from Consumer Reports, VW owner forums point to a number of specific problem areas that buyers should be aware of, says Contributing Editor, Chris Chase.

2010 Volkswagen Golf and GTI
Improved interior quality and design, a quieter cabin, a new diesel engine, a new wagon bodystyle, and newly available features are the major highlights of the redesigned Golf and GTI, says CarTalkCanada editor, James Bergeron.

2009 Volkswagen New Beetle Convertible, Silver-Red Edition
The New Beetle Convertible sacrifices practicality for retro styling and cuteness, says contributor Michael Clark. The trunk is small, the rear seat is uncomfortable, and underhood access for servicing is tight. But it does have “proven mechanicals,” he says.

2009 Volkswagen Passat CC
Only four will fit in the Volkswagen Passat CC, but that's a welcome change from cramped competitors, says contributor Michael Clark, who praises its sculptured driver's pod, large and useful trunk, and "restful and spacious comfort" in the rear seat.

2009 Volkswagen Touareg TDI
A practical, roomy SUV loaded with luxury features, the VW Touareg TDI also offers excellent fuel economy and a long driving range, says contributor Michael Clark. But its folding rear seatbacks are due for a redesign, he says.

2009 Volkswagen Touareg TDI
The Touareg TDI’s torquey diesel engine provides outstanding pulling power, thrifty fuel consumption and a long driving range, reports contributor, Bob McHugh. You will be impressed with the new TDI’s overall performance and quietness, says McHugh.

2009 Volkswagen Eos Silver-Red Edition
The Volkswagen Eos isn’t inexpensive, but it’s the best four-seater hardtop retractable in its price range, says Assistant Editor Jil McIntosh. Its turbocharged engine is strong, handling is nice, and the top includes a sliding sunroof for cooler days.

2009 Volkswagen Routan Highline
It may be a reworked Dodge Grand Caravan, but the Volkswagen Routan has all the roominess, seating flexibility, interior storage, and cargo space of its parent, says Michael Clark. The quality of cabin materials and fit-and-finish could be better, though.

VW Golf/Jetta/New Beetle, 1999-2005
“I want to recommend these cars for their nice driving attributes and attractive looks, but my practical side just can’t do it, given their poor reliability history,” says Contributing Editor, Chris Chase.
